Bernard Thanks for all the information. I found it most odd for Isabella to have had no children. I don't know of any Hornbys who may have been a priest. I suppose it is very possible. I did find other Hornbys in the Eccleston area but I couldn't make a connection I feel they may have be James Hornby's brothers. If I can find my notes I will let you know. The only possible connection may be Charles Lofthouse who was working at a catholic college in Liverpool which was connected to Stoneyhurst. I have not been able to trace him since he appears on the census for 1871 in Liverpool. I am attaching some photographs of the Hornby grave which i visited today the writing is very weather-beaten. I was able to move the cross and this writing is legible. Mary Myerscough was born in 1764 in Poulton le Fylde and died in 1790. She was the daughter of James Myerscough (1737 1790) and Dorothy Parkinson (1734 1801) from Singleton. Hope this is some use to you.

From Bernard Huntingon: My cousin has been to Hurst Green today and located the Joseph Hornby gravestone, mentioned by Roy Pieve Joseph is buried at St Peters Church, Stoneyhurst. Gravestone Inscription is:Hurst Green Cemetery - The grave is, from the entrance nearest the village , about the 3rd tree on the left from the path, and 8 graves in. It is about 3’ square x 5' high, it had a cross on the top which would have been another 3', but this is now propped up against one side making reading the inscription's on this side a little difficult. I have taken a photo, but doubt whether it will be readable. Also taken one of the cross, it is with an ordinary camera, and the 1st on the roll, so will be ages before I get the film finished. There is an inscription on all four sides as follow:-
Of your charity pray for the soul of Alice wife of Joseph Hornby died 7th May 1876 age 72 and for Joseph Hornby died 27 Jan 1888 age 85 ________________ John son of William and Isabella Ellel who died 18 May 1880 age 19 ____________________ Mary Elizabeth Ellel Cornelius Ellel and Charles Ellel children of William and Isabella died in Infancy. ____________________ This is the side with the cross propped up so reading was a little difficult. Isabella of ?eliot of something like, thought it may of said wife but the word definitely to long) William Ellel, of Blackburn who died Jan 27 1883 age 50. and right on the bottom of this side is Alice McRobie or Mc Probie died Sept 7 1908 age 65 years. -------------------------------------

There are small inconsistencies eg mother Elizabeth (when expected Alice) Cottam; Father recorded as Butcher and not tailor. However, William was an apprentice tailor in the UK and after his stint as a farmworker this william started up a tailors business CHARLES HORNBY was born in Lancashire, England, August 5, 1830, son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Cottam) Hornby, parents of eight chil. dren, the father a butcher by trade. He began the tailor's trade as an apprentice at the age of eleven, serving nine years, and emigrated to the United States in 1856. He came directly to Little Sandusky, having a cash capital of 40 cents, and engaged as a farm laborer for S. M. Fowler, by whom he was employed seven years. In 1863, he rented a small shop in the burg, and gradually established his now thriving merchant tailoring business. His first bill of goods was purchased at a cost of $200; he now carries a stock of $3,000 in ready-made and piece goods, notions, etc. Mr. Hornby was married, July 18, 1856, to Miss Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Bradley, and four children were born to them-Alice (wife of Hiram Fowler), Della (wife of Frank Stoneburner), Ernest and Maud. Mrs. Hornby died in 1869, aged thirty-three years, and Mr. H. was married April 12, 1871, to Mary Martin, daughter of C. S. Martin. (See sketch of B. W. Martin.) This latter marriage has resulted in the birth of four children, viz., Roy, Floy, Edward and a babe unchristened. It is about 3' square x 5' high, it had a cross on the top which would have been another 3', but this is now propped up against one side making reading the inscription's on this side a little difficult.
