ABSTRACT Depression is also a highly prevalent but treatable disorder and is a leading cause of disability, work place absenteeism, and increased use of health care resources. Depression has been shown to be a common co-morbidity in diabetes, affecting 10% to 30 % of the diabetic population. The Montreal Diabetes Health and Well-Being Study (DHS) is a telephone survey of adults with diabetes in Quebec, Canada. Participants were recruited between January and April 2008 through random digit dialling selection in Quebec (n=2003). Adults eligible to participate were 18 to 80 years of age at baseline and had a diagnosis of diabetes determined by a physician. Three follow-up interviews were conducted so far approximately 12, 24 and 36 months after baseline. Minor and major depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of the complex relationship between diabetes, depression, and disability while taking into account disease severity, self-care behaviours, and lifestyle behaviours.
