WORDS OF WELCOME

MOTS DE BIENVENUE

ASAC 2012 Conference Chair – Travor C. Brown Welcome to ASAC 2012! The conference location, Newfoundland and Labrador has a rich history of exploration. Over 9000 years ago, the first aboriginal population moved to Labrador while Leif Eriksson and his Viking crew settled on the Island near 1000 A.D. As the name implies, “New Found Land” was among the first places to be visited by European explorers over 500 years ago when Italian-born Giovanni Caboto (referred to as John Cabot) ‘discovered’ the province, claiming it as British land. In the years that followed, fishers from England, France, Ireland, Spain, and Portugal all explored our shores and land. Even today, you will see elements of this diverse history in our place names and culture.

I can think of no better place to explore our conference theme of “Exploring the New World of Work”. This theme builds on our exploration heritage and is appropriate given the demographic, technological, ethical, cross-cultural and legal changes occurring in modern organizations. I welcome you to St. John’s to explore the “New World of Work” in a stimulating and congenial setting. I am certain that the natural beauty of my home province, and its rich cultural heritage, will provide a vibrant backdrop for this conference.

3|ASAC

Dean - Dr. Wilfred Zerbe

Doyen - Dr. Wilfred Zerbe

Welcome to ASAC 2012 and welcome to beautiful St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador! This is the 40th annual conference and the third time Memorial University has hosted the gathering – the only university to host ASAC three times.

As the conference theme “Exploring the New World of Work” suggests, you are in for a thought provoking few days. Papers, presentations and other sessions will reveal new perspectives and findings. We will learn more about how technology, global economic and social trends and other forces are impacting employees and organizations in a host of industries and labour markets. While these discussions will surely spark debate, we hope they will also stimulate further research and foster collaboration amongst delegates.

Submissions for the conference were received from more than 30 countries and I am pleased to welcome delegates, authors and contributors from the US, Brazil, India, Tunisia, Taiwan, Australia and other nations, as well as managers and scholars from across Canada.

It has taken vision, dedication and many months of hard work to make ASAC 2012 a reality and I’d like to compliment the leadership team, especially Conference Chair Dr. Travor Brown, on organizing this event. I must also pay tribute to the many academics and scholars who submitted and reviewed papers, case studies and more, ensuring the high-quality of these proceedings.

And, finally, our thanks to the universities and other sponsors and exhibitors whose generous support makes this valuable learning experience possible. There certainly is a busy agenda in the days ahead, but I encourage you to take time to enjoy the food, music and culture that help to make this place a fitting setting for any discussion of discovery.

Wishing you all an enjoyable stay.
