Pedal Lock

“Pedal Lock” is not only a special bicycle lock but also a bicycle pedal. It can prevent thieves from stealing the bike by breaking the lock. If the lock has been damaged, the pedals are out of working at the same time and cannot be rode. “Pedal Lock” can also prevent users from riding the bike without unlocking the lock, which may cause the lock twisting into the wheel and lead the bike out of working.

Background Nowadays, People pay more and more attention on environmental protection and health problem, which makes “bike” become a more popular transportation option. In addition, in my own country, the rate of bike stealing increased recent years. Sometimes they can steal your bike even you have already locked your bike, I’ve been through this several times, and that drove me crazy. That why I decided to brain storming about this phenomenon, hoping to make some improvements, protecting not only my own bike, but also every body’s bike.

Challenge According to the research, bicycle stealing belongs to “Opportunity Criminal” of criminology. It does not need particular plan and any secret surroundings. The common way to steal bicycle is to use pliers to break the lock. There are two common types of bicycle lock, which are coil type and U-shaped metal, and two ways to unlock the bike---the key and the password lock. Therefore, it comes out the following problems: 1. 2. 3. 4.

The coil type lock may be cut off easily. Users usually forget to unlock and cause bicycles out of working. It is easy to decode the password. The bike will be the escape tool after the theft breaks the lock.

“Pedal Lock” is a creative design to challenge bicycle stealing problem.

Design Solution “Pedal Lock” is designed under the circumstance of realization of bicycle stealing, and it has the following characteristics: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Impair the willing of the theft to steal. Increase the difficulty of breaking the lock. Increase the difficulty of escape, and not to make the bike be the tool of escape. Increase distinguishability in order to easily find out one’s own bike among all the bikes. Prevent the user from forgetting to unlock and cause bicycle out of working.

How to use 1. Push inside, and let the pedal buckle the orange hexagon junction. 2. Counter-clockwise rotate 2 rounds. 3. Separate the pedal. 4. Roll out the iron pole of one of the pedal. 5. Buckle two pedals on the wheel. 6.Use the key to lock it.
