Chapter 9, lesson 1 The House of the future There will be a virtual reality room in which you can visit and see far away places. Have you ever wanted to go to Australia? Would you like to see what it is like in the North Pole? With the virtual reality room, you will be there in no time. The walls will be filled with recycled papers to provide insulation. The windows will be triple glazed for energy efficiency, and they will self clean. A smart computer will handle everything in the house, from the shopping list to the heating, and the closing of doors and windows. It will also automatically turn off every electrical device when you leave the house. The smart computer will always be connected to a smart board and your mobile phone. Thanks to that, you will be able to do almost anything no matter where you are. You will be able to turn on the heaters or close the shutters. You will be able to run a bath on your way home so it can be ready for when you get there or feed the cat when you are on holiday. When you go home, the smart computer will automatically recognise your mobile phone and unlock the door for you. You won’t need your keys anymore! House robots will do many things to help us. They will take out the trash, they will go shopping, and they will even cook for us. And since we won’t have to do any of those things anymore, we will have more time to relax. Thanks to your smart phone and your house robot, you will be able to prepare dinner while you come home in your car, or while you are watching a film in the living room. Some of us will become very lazy! By Mike Anderson
