CHAPITRE  6  (R.Iacono,  PSI)   L’IMMIGRATION  AUX  ETATS-­‐UNIS     Starting  of  immigration   1st  settlement:  Jamestown  (which  initiated  the   1st  legislative  assembly)  

1607      

French  settlers  of  Canada  settle  in  the  Northern  area  (NY  State).  But  in  the  future   (18th  century)  they  cannot  face  the  English  settlers  (1,500,000  people  in  the  13   Colonies)  

1608      

William  Penn  gets  what  is  now  Pennsylvania  from  Charles  II  in  order  to   build  a  new  settlement,  a  mixed  of  several  creeds  and  nationalities.   A  year  later,  the  first  settlers  are  coming  in  the  City  of  Brotherly  Love  (now   Philadelphia).     3,700,000  people  emigrated  from  the  Austro-­‐Hungarian  Empire.   1820  to  1978  :  3,374,000  emigrated  from  Russia.     Sweden,  Norway  &  Holland  also  participated.

Wave  of  French   immigration  in  USA  

First  Chinese  immigrants  on  the   Pacific  coast.   Today:  14,000  Chinese  in   Chinatown.   1870:  anti-­‐Chinese  riots  and  laws   about  their  immigration  

  12M  immigrants  screened  in  the  Federal  Immigration  Station  on  Ellis  Island   (in  NY  Harbour).  Only  2%  were  refused  entry  in  the  “Island  of  tears”  (Ellis   Island)       (Economic  hardships,  unemployment  or  famine  provoke  the  immigration  in  the  19th  century)   1892  (to  1954)
