IBC Daily Friday 8 September 2006 Dual link for content creators by Adrian Pennington Understanding that IBC is based around content creation, management and distribution, Tektronix has introduced three new products to support those areas. "For content creation we're launching the HDLG7 HD Dual Link video generator," said Winfried Schultz, video marketing manager, EMEA. "This is for those broadcasters like the BBC who have standardised on higher frame rates at 1080 lines which require more data than a single HD link can carry. "The addition of the dual link for content creators is very important for us," he added. Sony and Grass Valley have acknowledged the role it would play as part of high definition acquisition. The HDLG7 provides a SMPTE 372M compliant interface for dual link HD SDI, with the ability to either generate a set of standard test signals or up-convert a single link HD SDI input signal to a dual link output format. "The really compelling thing about this generator is that it can feed in different pieces of equipment by generating either well-defined test signals or arbitrary video signals," said Schultz. In addition it will calibrate displays and recording equipment to standard test patterns. Two new Tektronix products address the distribution end of the production chain. "The bulk of Tektronix business lies in distribution so the convergence of the distribution market makes these product developments extremely important for us," said Schultz. The RTX130B platform has been upgraded to incorporate an MPEG and RF signal generator and also record analysis. "It was developed to help software engineers design and trouble shoot both unmodulated and RF modulated playout of MPEG transport streams," he said. "By improving the efficiency and productivity in engineering and manufacturing of these products, the RTX130B helps reduce product development expenses and shorten the time it takes to bring products to market." The product is developed for the design and evaluation of consumer DVB-C/QAM and ATSC/8-VSB compliant devices which require a directly modulated RF input, such as set-top boxes and integrated digital televisions. Tektronix has also engineered a device to help strengthen and simplify network monitoring. The MTM400 IP/GiGe allows network engineers to view multi or single programme transport streams over Gigabit Ethernet networks, identify signal degradation issues and correct the problems. Schultz: "This is important for any operator who is rolling out new TV services using IP in their core network to secure a high level of network reliability. Poor signal delivery can greatly impact picture quality which in turn reduces customer satisfaction." 9.429
