Carbon footprint

I

Introduction A ’carbon footprint’ is a measure of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with an activity, group of activities or a product. Nearly everything that we do produces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions either directly or indirectly ; whether it be getting to work, watching TV or buying our lunch. The most important greenhouse gas produced by human activities is carbon dioxide. The purpose of this document is to calculate the carbon footprint of a car drive, then to compute the number of trees we have to plant to offset our emission. Indeed, plants use the sun, water, minerals and carbon dioxide to make glucose/sugar, which is their energy/food and release oxygen.

Calculate the carbon footprint

1. In the USA, U.S gallon is unit of volume and mile is a unit of length. Knowing that 1 U.S gallon is about 3.5 litres and 1 mile is about 1.6 km. a. Convert 54 miles to km

c. Convert 20 gallons to litres

b. Convert 200 km to mile

d. Convert 50 litres to gallons.

2. Knowing the consumption of a vehicule is 42 miles per gallon. What does that represent in L/100 km. 3. Knowing that a gallon of gasoline emits roughly 2.4 kilograms of carbon. How many kilograms of carbon do you release for a 100 miles drive knowing the consumption of your vehicule is 42 miles per gallon ? To convert your answer to carbon dioxide, multiply by 3.67 So, what is the carbon footprint of your trip ?

Offsetting the carbon fooprint

1. According to Methodology for Forest Guardians’ Carbon Offset Program (By J. Doyne Farmer, Professor, Santa Fe Institute), a 370 trees per hectare forest fixes about 130 metric tons of carbon per hectare over a hundred-year period. But, we estimate that 1 in 10 trees will survive from planting to full maturity (approximately 100 years). How many trees do you have to plant to offset your 100 miles drive ? 2. We note x the number of gallons consumed during a trip and N the number of trees we have to plant to offset our trip. Prove that N = 0.068x 3. We note N the function wich associates the numbers of gallons to the numbers of trees. N is a linear function. a. What is the general form of ac. What is the slope of the graph linear function ? of N ? b. What si the graph of N ?

d. What is the y-intercept ?

4. Plot the graph of N . 5. The purpose of this question is to calculate how many trees we have to plant to offset our trip to England ? Let’s assume that – the bus consumes 6miles per gallon. – About 2.77kg of carbon are produced by burning a gallon of diesel fuel. – The travelled distance is about 800 miles. How many trees you have to plant to offset our trip ?
