Copenhagen International School Summer Program: JUNE 24 – JULY 5: Weekdays: 09:00 – 15:00 Byens Hegn Mural Project: Reinterpreting Østerbro Project Leaders: Jacoba Niepoort & Brendan Dean Grades 8 – 12: Two week intensive mural painting project: learn how to create a large public work of Art. Artists Jacoba Niepoort and Brendan Dean are looking for students in grades 8 - 12 interested in Art to help produce a large public work of art that will be installed on the wooden green construction walls on Øster Søgade, in the Østerbro district of Copenhagen. This is a public city beautification project and it will be an intensive and exciting two weeks of work, during which time you will learn how to plan, organize, and complete a large work of art with a group. You will learn techniques related to realism and perspective drawing, but also pattern-making and other abstract elements of art. The project has been approved by the local authorities and has received funding from Byens Hegn and Østerbro Lokaludvalg to cover material costs. Now all we need is you! "Reinterpreting Østerbro" will be a mural measuring approximately 2 x 10 meters. It is a panoramic image of the Østerbro area, including a view of the lakes and the local cityscape. The image will be more than simply a realistic representation of the city, and will incorporate abstract elements of art including pattern and text, specifically handwriting. Students will be required to work hard, follow instructions, and help us meet our deadline. The project must be completed by the end of the summer program. Following completion of the project we will hold a public reception of the work with food, talks, and news coverage, to acknowledge everyone involved. The aim of the project is not only to produce an interesting work of public art, but also to teach students how to go about planning and undertaking a large work of art with a group. Brendan and Jacoba have painted numerous public and private murals, including ones in Sweden, Mexico, and the United States, and both have lots of knowledge to share with you regarding what it means to be a professional artist (see JacobaNiepoort.com for examples). We will discuss and teach students the skills and work required to get an idea off the ground and onto the walls. This will include information of how and where to apply for grants, estimate and buy necessary materials, create and project a sketch, and install a finished product. These are skills that extend well beyond the realm of art. Due to the size of the image, we will use a projector to make the sketch before painting. Steady hands, positive attitudes, and a sincere interest in public art are required. We want to utilize the variety of skills that you as artists possess and can contribute to the project. Space is limited, so sign up today!
