President’s Message

I

t gives me great pleasure to write this greeting for the first Bulletin of the IAAF World Championships, Beijing 2015. The timing of its publication could not be more opportune as 22 August 2014 marks exactly one year to go to the start of the championships. In recent months our Coordination Commission and Technical Delegates have made site visits to Beijing to assist and access the planning process. While most recently a progress report was delivered by the Local Organising Committee to the IAAF Council which was meeting in Eugene, USA, ahead of the IAAF World Junior Championships. On that occasion, Chinese Athletics Federation vice president Chunde Shen reported preparations for the "one year to go" celebrations which will take place in the centre of the Chinese capital on 22 August. The official poster and mascot of the championships will be revealed and a large countdown clock will be unveiled next to the National Stadium, better known as the "Bird’s Nest." The IAAF World Championships, Beijing 2015 which take place from 22 to 30 August 2015, will be primarily hosted in this stadium, which was the venue for the 2008 Olympic Games and is the setting for the annual IAAF World Challenge meeting. The IAAF World Championships will be the biggest sporting event on the planet in 2015. 2000 athletes from over 200 nations will assemble in Beijing in a year’s time for nine days of competition which will be broadcast to an accumulated audience of 6 billion worldwide. The magnitude of the task to organise championships of this size is of course enormous, but with a year to go I am confident that the IAAF and the Local Organising Committee, together with our Official IAAF Partners and suppliers and National partners, will be able to deliver a spectacular edition of the championships. Lamine Diack IAAF President

a kind. Beijing has become one of the world’s best tourist destinations. Beijing is a dynamic metropolis, with sports serving as one of its representative industries. The world has witnessed Beijing’s strength and its potential for hosting large international sporting events such as the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Beijing has gained invaluable experience in organising large international sporting events and in operating its state-of-the-art sports venues. After the 2008 Olympics, Beijing has held a number of major international sporting events, such as the Beijing Marathon, the Tour of Beijing, the Beijing International Triathlon, swimming competitions of the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA), the World Men’s Curling Championship and the Cup of China ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating. These have all helped Beijing earn the reputation of being a world sports centre.

History of Athletics in China

L'Athlétisme en Chine

Although Chinese involvement in athletics started relatively late, significant progress has been made. In May 1890, Shanghai held its first athletic competition, marking the start of modern sports competition in China. Afterwards, athletics pursuits became popular and developed rapidly in China. In 1978, the Chinese Athletic Association (CAA) became a member of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), and it has vigorously participated in the management of the IAAF at all levels. The CAA has made great efforts to serve the cooperation between China and the IAAF, and the promotion of athletics in Asia and the world. The IAAF has nine regional development centres around the world, one of which is located in Beijing. The IAAF World Championships will be held in Beijing in 2015, and it will significantly promote athletics in China, Asia and the world. During the development of Chinese athletics, some Chinese competitors have gained international success and fame. In 1957, Zheng Fengrong set the women’s high jump world record with a leap of 1.77 metres in a Beijing athletics event, opening up a new chapter for the Chinese to make major achievements in athletics worldwide. In

11

1983, Zhu Jianhua took the bronze medal in the men’s high jump at the First IAAF World Championships. In 1991, Huang Zhihong and Xu Demei won the women’s shot put and the women’s javelin respectively at the Third IAAF World Championships. Liu Xiang won the men’s 110-metre hurdles with a time of 12.19 seconds at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, becoming the first Asian contestant to win a gold medal in a sprint event at the Olympic Games. Chinese athletics has thrived for more than 100 years thanks to the keen interest and enthusiastic participation characteristic of the Chinese youth. Currently, a physical education programme is a mandatory part of education for more than 400 million young Chinese. In Beijing, numerous young people vigorously participate in athletics activities. The IAAF World Championships will be held in 2015 in Beijing and it will be a good opportunity for them to watch this major sporting event and support their favourite stars. It will encourage them to appreciate and participate in sports, and to ultimately contribute to world athletics.

National Stadium (‘Bird’s Nest’)

Stade National-Nid d’oiseau

The National Stadium (the “Bird’s Nest”) was the core venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The IAAF World Championships will be held there in 2015. The National Stadium is an eco-friendly stadium featuring a steel structure with the world’s largest span and a transparent roof. The 258,000-square-metre stadium was built in 2003 and it officially opened in 2008. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, a number of top athletes, such as Usain Bolt and Yelena Isinbayeva forged moments never to be forgotten. The National Stadium lives in the hearts of millions as the location for the people of the world to witness groundbreaking achievements. The Organising Committee of the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015 will conduct renovations

for the stadium to meet the needs of the event. After the renovations, it will accommodate 80,000 fixed seats in three levels. Three LED display screens will be installed for the event. In early 2015, the surface layer of the Tartan Track will be renovated to satisfy the the IAAF Competition Category I requirement. Located in the north of the stadium, is the warm-up field for athletes. There are two passageways to link the stadium and the warm-up field, and the distance is about 80 metres. The warm-up field has 8 running lanes, which can meet the needs of all the athletes to warm up for the games. It is separated from the public areas and is fully equipped with all relevant facilities. The stadium is situated in the south of the Olympic Green. Located in the vicinity are the National Aquatics Center (the “Water Cube”), the Olympic Green and the National Indoor Stadium. Convenient public transport is available in the area. There are more than 40 bus routes and 5 bus stops in the area, as well as a Line 8 subway station attached to subway line 8. The area’s underground parking lot can accommodate more than 2,000 vehicles. After the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the National Stadium was mainly used to hold international high-end events and cultural performances, while also serving as one of Beijing’s famous tourist attractions.

16
