II

On April 23, 1793, 110 men, 9 women and 9 children arrived at Gournay from Dieppe. They were English prisoners of war escorted by two “maréchaux de logis” (the marechal de logis is a sort of staff-sergeant) three other sergeants and 17 mounted Gendarmes. The prisoners had been captured on April 15 by the Dunkirk privateer "L'Ami des Lois." (See the Gournay-Hailsham Bulletin, number .........) The records of the Town Council of the Municipality of Gournay, covering the first two years of their "accommodation" in Gournay (1793-1794), have allowed 47 of these to be identified as follows: OFFICERS: •

To this were added two domestic servants: Barel John and Deighton Samuel. Of the nine women, the name of only one has survived: “Femme Molloy.” (The woman Molloy) It would seem, nonetheless, that the sergeants were accompanied by their wives. On 25 August 1793 this contingent was joined by a further consignement of 10 British and Dutch prisoners of war. - Englishmen identified: Smith David, ship’s captain, Kelly Roger. - Dutchmen identified: Yluland Cornelis, Gysbert de Near , Fokkeir Fokke. to be continued
