They say that the prospe t of being hanged in the morning on entrates a man's mind wonderfully ; unfortunately, what the mind inevitably on entrates on is that, in the morning, it will be in a body that is going to be hanged. The man going to be hanged had been named Moist von Lipwig by doting if unwise parents, but he was not going to embarrass the name, insofar as that was still possible, by being hung under it. To the world in general, and parti ularly on that bit of it known as the death warrant, he was Alfred Spangler. And he took a more positive approa h to the situation and had on entrated his mind on the prospe t of not being hanged in the morning, and, most parti ularly, on the prospe t of removing all the rumbling mortar from around a stone in his ell wall with a spoon. So far the work had taken him ve weeks and redu ed the spoon to something like a nail le. Fortunately, no one ever ame to hange the bedding here, or else they would have dis overed the world's heaviest mattress. It was a large and heavy stone that was urrently the obje t of his attentions, and, at some point, a huge staple had been hammered into it as an an hor for mana les. Moist sat down fa ing the wall, gripped the iron ring in both hands, bra ed his legs against the stones on either side, and heaved. His shoulders aught re, and a red mist lled his vision, but the blo k slid out with a faint and inappropriate tinkling noise. Moist managed to ease it away from the hole and peered inside. At the far end was another blo k, and the mortar around it looked suspi iously strong and fresh. Just in front of it was a new spoon. It was shiny. As he studied it, he heard the lapping behind him. He turned his head, tendons twanging a little ri of agony, and saw several of the wardens wat hing him through the bars. From Keyword : LUCKY

Some of the things you ould learn up a drainpipe at night were surprising. For example, people paid attention to small soundsthe li k of a window at h, the link of a lo k pi kmore than they did to big sounds, like a bri k falling into the street or even (for this was, after all, Ankh-Morpork) a s ream. These were loud sounds, whi h were, therefore, publi sounds, whi h, in turn, meant they were everyone's problem and, therefore, not mine. But small sounds were nearby and suggested su h things as stealth betrayed, and were, therefore, pressing and personal. Therefore, he tried not to make little noises. Below him, the oa h yard of the Central Post O e buzzed like an overturned hive. They'd got the turntable working really well now. The overnight oa hes were arriving and the new Überwald Flyer was gleaming in the lamplight. Everything was going right, whi h was, to the nighttime limber, why everything was going wrong. The limber thrust a bri k key into soft mortar, shifted his weight, moved his foo Damn pigeon ! It ew up in pani , his other foot slipped, his ngers lost their grip on the drainpipe, and when the world had stopped hurning, he was owing the postponement of his meeting with the distant obbles to his hold on a bri k key, whi h was, let's fa e it, nothing more than a long, at nail with a T-pie e grip. And you an't blu a wall, he thought. If you swing, you might get your hand and foot on the pipe, or the key might ome out. From Keyword : PARANO

Sam Vimes sighed when he heard the s ream, but he nished shaving before he did anything about it. Then he put his ja ket on and strolled out into the wonderful late spring morning. Birds sang in the trees, bees buzzed in the blossom. The sky was hazy though, and thunderheads on the horizon threatened rain later. But for now, the air was hot and heavy. And in the old esspit behind the gardener's shed, a young man was treading water. Well ... treading, anyway. Vimes stood ba k a little way and lit a igar. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to employ a naked ame any nearer to the pit. The fall from the shed roof had broken the

rust. Good morning !" he said heerfully. Good morning, Your Gra e," said the industrious treadler. The voi e was higher pit hed that Vimes expe ted and he realized that, most unusually, the young man in the pit was in fa t a young woman. It wasn't entirely unexpe ted the Assassins' Guild was aware that women were at least equal to their brothers when it

Everything starts somewhere, although many physi ists disagree. But people have always been dimly aware of the problem with the start of things. They wonder aloud how the snowplow driver gets to work, or how the makers of di tionaries look up the spelling of the words. Yet there is the onstant desire to nd some point in the twisting, knotting, raveling nets of spa e-time on whi h a metaphori al nger an be put to indi ate that here, here, is the point where it all began ... Something began when the Guild of Assassins enrolled Mister Teatime, who saw things dierently from other people, and one of the ways that he saw things dierently from other people was in seeing other people as things (later, Lord Downey of the Guild said, "We took pity on him be ause he'd lost both parents at an early age. I think that, on ree tion, we should have wondered a bit more about that"). But it was mu h earlier even than that when most people forgot that the very oldest stories are, sooner or later, about blood. Later on they took the blood out to make the stories more a

eptable to hildren, or at least to the people who had to read them to

hildren rather than the hildren themselves (who, on the whole, are quite keen on blood provided it's being shed by the deserving*), and then wondered where the stories went. And earlier still when something in the darkness of the deepest aves and gloomiest forests thought : what are they, these reatures ? I will observe them ... From Keyword : MUSIC

Against the stars a turtle passes, arrying four elephants on its shell. Both turtle and elephants are bigger than people might expe t, but out between the stars the dieren e between huge and tiny is, omparatively speaking, very small. But this turtle and these elephants are, by turtle and elephant standards, big. They arry the Dis world, with its vast lands, louds apes, and o eans. People don't live on the Dis any more than, in less hand- rafted parts of the multiverse, they live on balls. Oh, planets may be the pla e where their body eats its tea, but they live elsewhere, in worlds of their own whi h orbit very handily around the enter of their heads. When gods get together they tell the story of one parti ular planet whose inhabitants wat hed, with mild interest, huge ontinent-wre king slabs of i e slap into another world whi h was in astronomi al terms, right next doorand then did nothing about it be ause that sort of thing only happens in Outer Spa e. An intelligent spe ies would at least have found someone to omplain to. Anyway, no one seriously believes in that story, be ause a ra e quite that stupid would never even have dis overed slood.* People believe in all sorts of other things, though. For example, there are some people who have a legend that the whole universe is arried in a leather bag by an old man. They're right, too. Other people say : hold on, if he's arrying the entire universe in a sa k, right, that means he's arrying himself and the sa k inside the sa k, be ause the universe ontains everything. In luding him. It was a moonless night, whi h was good for the purposes of Solid Ja kson. He shed for Curious Squid, so alled be ause, as well as being squid, they were urious. The Curious Squid were very small, harmless, di ult to nd and re koned by

There is where the gods play games with the lives of men, on a board whi h is at one and the same time a simple playing area and the whole world. And Fate always wins. Fate always wins. The eyes of Fate are hardly eyes at all just dark holes into an innity spe kled with what may be stars or, there again, may be other things. Now onsider the tortoise and the eagle. The tortoise is a ground-living reature. It is impossible to live nearer the ground without being under it. Its horizons are a few in hes away. It has about as good a turn of speed as you need to hunt down a lettu e. It has survived while the rest of evolution owed past it by being, on the whole, no threat to anyone and too mu h trouble to eat. And then there is the eagle. A reature of the air and high pla es, whose horizons go all the way to the edge of the world. Eyesight keen enough to spot the rustle of some small and squeaky reature half a mile away. All power, all ontrol. Lightning death on wings. Talons and laws enough to make a meal of anything smaller than it is and at least take a hurried sna k out of anything bigger. And yet the eagle will sit for hours on the rag and survey the kingdoms of the world until it spots a distant movement and then it will fo us, fo us, fo us on the small shell wobbling among the bushes down there on the desert. And it will leap . . . And a minute later the tortoise nds the world dropping away from it. And it sees the world for the rst time, no longer one in h from the ground but ve hundred feet above it, and it thinks : what a great friend I have in the eagle. And then the eagle lets go. If Youth, throughout all history, had had a hampion to stand up for it ; to show a doubting world that a hild an think ; and, possibly, do it pra ti ally, you wouldn't onstantly run a ross folks today who laim that "a hild don't know anything." A hild's brain starts fun tioning at birth ; and has, amongst its many infant onvolutions, thousands of dormant atoms, into whi h God has put a mysti possibility for noti ing an adult's a t, and guring out its purport. Up to about its primary s hool days a hild thinks, naturally, only of play. But many a form of play ontains dis iplinary fa tor. "You an't do this," or "that puts out out," shows a hild that it must think, pra ti ally, or fail. Now, if, throughout hildhood, a brain has no opposition, it is plain that it will attain a position of "status quo," as with our ordinary animals. Man knows not why a ow, dog, or lion was not born with a brain on a par with ours ; why su h animals annot add, subtra t, or obtain from books and s hooling, that paramount position whi h Man Holds today. But a human brain is not in that lass. Constantly throbbing and pulsating, it rapidly forms opinions ; attaining an ability of its own ; a fa t whi h is startlingly shown by an o

asional hild "prodigy" in musi or s hool work. And as, with our dumb animals, a

hild's inability onvin ingly to impart its thoughts to us, should not lass it as ignorant. Upon this basis I am going to show you how a bun h of bright young folks did nd a

hampion ; a man with boys and girls of his own ; a man of so dominating and happy individuality that Youth is drawn to him as is a y to a sugar bowl. It is a story about a small town. It is not a gossipy yarn ; nor is it a dry, monotonous a

ount, full of su h

ustomary "ll-ins" as "romanti moonlight asting murky shadows down a long, winding ountry road." Nor will it say anything about tinklings lulling distant folds ; robins

arolling at twilight, nor any "warm glow of lamplight" from a abin window. No. It is an a

ount of up-and-doing a tivity ; a vivid portrayal of Youth as it is today ; and a pra ti al dis arding of that worn-out notion that "a hild don't know anything." From Keyword : AVOID
