TWINS AND TROMPE L'OEIL Two exhibitions curated by Claude Hudelot.

TWINS When 21 year-old Shanghainese Gemini twins Cara & Celine are not attending their design or sculpture courses, they are busy preparing new clothes to “perform” in downtown vernissages. Images by ProVisual Agency photographers Jeremy Stockton Johnson and Giuseppe Ciaolo capture these twins dressed in a long piece of red fabric, thereby creating a stimulating, funny and erotic work based on the Gemini theme—the piece of fabric symbolizing the umbilical cord as well as the link which units the two forever. This work is an exhibition, a projection and even a performance – Cara & Celine dancing in front of their own giant images, choreographed by Michel Segain and ACE Connexion. The project emphasizes the mirror effects, the cunning ambiguity of these two young women and the illusion they are inviting. The fact that three directors of Island6, Thomas Charveriat, Margherita Salmaso and Zheng Guawei, also have twins, Christopher Charveriat, Martina Salmaso and Zheng Guoyang; adds a certain significance to the adventure. TROMPE L' OEIL A philosopher turned sculptor, Christian Renonciat became famous in France and around the world thanks to a very peculiar work out of wood, declining what the artist himself once named “The matter of things”. Strangely, magically, wood vanishes to make way for the representation of “packaging”, “cardboards”, “wool blankets” or “plastic tarpaulins”. Renonciat’s work, playing to the letter in “Trompe l’Oeil”, is going far beyond a mystification full of flavor. On one hand, it bears witness to these sculptures' tenderness and eroticism on which everybody wants to touch, to feel, for better deceiving himself of herself; on the other, this work is insidiously leading us to a thought on the “matter of things”, on the substitution of the object to the benefit of a vertiginous “sculpture within sculpture”. These two exhibitions are wonderfully conversing in the two spaces devoted to each: one of them stimulates the illusion of matter and even of the subject itself, while the other stimulates the illusion of our own identity. “Mirror, my beautiful mirror...” Claude Hudelot, Shanghai 2007

"Plug IT"

“PlugIT” is an exhibition of young and emerging artists who have engaged the use of electronic or computer technologies as a creative vehicle in their artmaking process. Twelve artists from around the world will be converging on Island6 premise to showcase some of the most innovative art ever seen or experienced in Shanghai. Everything gets plugged, everything runs on power, lights and sounds comes out from the walls to waken the beautiful four-storey red building standing near the Suzhou river since 1898.

An event curated by Thomas Charveriat and presenting the work of Yang Longhai (CN), Malvina Delesalle (FR), Maxime Gabillet (FR), Tomoyo Funabashi (JP), Zane Mellupe (LV), Valère Terrier (FR), Zou Susu (CN), Christophe Demaître (BE), Oussama Laftimi (MA) and Daniel Wessolek (DE).

For some people technology is a tool to help make life easier and automate daily functions. For others, it is a way to effortlessly and powerfully communicate with other people around the globe. Some users see technology for its entertainment purposes. For the artists showing at Island6, technology is all of these things and much more. It enables them to do anything they ever dreamt of achieving and become everything they wanted to be: successful and innovative artists working and collaborating together, sharing knowledge and moving forward as a group. Team work and cultural exchange helped the creation of super artists, those who can maneuver laser lights, CNC router, computer controlled vinyl cutter, arc welder but also PCB etching and software programming. They became as skilful using the solder iron as they are with their cursors moving across Logic Audio, After Effect or JavaScript. Thanks to technology, their mind began to expand and grow; they use machines to help them erect an art factory inside Island6 walls, one whose endeavor is creativity and experimentation. With their help, technology becomes organic, digital reality comes alive, begins to speak, dream, conspire, and seduce. It's as though these young “children” of high-tech have chosen to electrify their own flesh with the most primal adornments transforming them into a kind of liquid-crystal display status: the body as electronic billboard, flashing, brutal, powerful and ultimately meaningless, yet existing in a splendid state of rebellion against the stifling oppression of "normal" dress and decorum. Everyday, the use of digital technologies in art practice becomes more and more prevalent, and just like the television, contemporary art generally has to be switched on before you can enjoy it. Island6’s artists “humanize” the technology by extending their methods and identifying with it. This desire appears to be among the driving forces in the conception of “PlugIT”, an exhibition that one century later reflects the effort of Mr. Sun Tao-shing who founded the ground of Island6 (Fou Foong Flour Mill) and made it the most innovative and biggest flour mill of Asia in 1897. It is hard to believe that only fifteen years after the first light bulb was exhibited on the Band Stand in the Public Gardens of Shanghai, Island6 became the most technology oriented factory of China, possessed its own power plant and was fully equipped with American machinery. The success of the Fou Foong Mill encouraged others and 16 more flour mills were built. We sincerely hope this success can be reproduced and that the arguments used in “PlugIT” will be as compelling to you as the artwork appears to be: all are one-of-a-kind, many never-before, only-here experience.
