“Play in tune, with a beautiful sound.” » If you ever asked Pinchas Zukerman to explain his philosophy of music, that’s probably what he’d tell you. And it is in pursuit of that philosophy over the past 16 seasons that he brought us indescribable beauty, whether from the podium, or from the unmistakeably lustrous sound of his violin and viola. But there was so much more. Pinchas transformed the superb NAC Orchestra into an even better ensemble by increasing its size and expanding its repertoire. He recruited wonderful new musicians, including Yosuke Kawasaki as concertmaster — the second in the Orchestra’s history. And Pinchas’s stature helped the NAC attract elite conductors and soloists from all over the world. He championed education. In 1999, he founded the NAC Summer Music Institute, which has provided world-class training to some of the most promising young musicians in Canada and from around the globe. And under his leadership, we developed distance learning initiatives, such as broadband masterclasses that allowed him to teach students as far away as China from the Hexagon Studio at the NAC. He led the Orchestra on many highly successful tours to communities across the country and around the world. From Mexico to Nova Scotia, and from British Columbia to China, he ensured that every

tour included education, with musicians going into schools, conservatories and community halls to teach and mentor the artists of tomorrow. To celebrate the best Canadian creators, Pinchas inaugurated the NAC Award for Canadian Composers in 2002, and over the next decade, the NAC selected six recipients — Denys Bouliane, John Estacio, Peter Paul Koprowski, Gary Kulesha, Alexina Louie and Ana Sokolovi´c. Thankfully, tonight’s performance is not really goodbye. We’re delighted that Pinchas will return November 5 and 6 to perform in a Baroque program with Amanda Forsyth and Chip Hamann. Pinchas, we will be forever grateful for your remarkable contributions to the NAC Orchestra, to music education, and to classical music in Canada.

DEAR/CHER
PINCHAS ZUKERMAN What Pinchas Zukerman gave us were the moments we sought, and the moments we most needed – when time seemed to suspend itself, when our scalp tingled, when our eyes filled with tears, and when nothing existed but the music for all who were lucky enough to be in the hall that night. Like so many of you here this evening, I have felt fortunate to be able to watch and listen to Pinchas and the NAC Orchestra over the past 16 seasons. I cannot count the hours I have spent, but know that each was precious. How happy we were to hear him bring out the best in this Orchestra as they performed the symphonic masterpieces! Or to watch him and the Orchestra triumph in the great concert halls of China as they performed new Canadian works like John Estacio’s Brio: Toccata and Fantasy for Orchestra, to highly appreciative audiences. And how grateful we were to hear him play some of the most beautiful concertos ever written on his “fiddle”. I will never forget his rendition of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto here in Southam Hall, or Bruch’s Violin Concerto at Salisbury Cathedral as part of the Orchestra’s UK Tour. Pinchas’s music transports us, but I have seen him be equally transformed,
4

particularly when he is teaching. Watching Pinchas work with young musicians – whether at the Summer Music Institute, on tour or through real-time videoconference technology, – has made my heart sing. He has made an incredible contribution to music education in Canada. Plato once said music “gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything.” That is what Pinchas, through his extraordinary gifts, has given to NAC audiences, to young artists, and to millions around the world. Thank you, Pinchas.

Ode to Joy
Bass (recitative) O friends – not these sounds! Let us sing of more pleasant and joyful things. Soloists and Chorus Joy, thou shining spark of God, Daughter of Elysium, Transported by your flame, we rise. Yours is the holiness of heaven. Your magic brings together again Those whom social custom has parted. All people become brothers Where your sweet bird flies.
Those to whom true friendship And happy marriage are given May join in jubilation, and Yes, whoever calls just one soul On the earth’s sphere his own. Whoever cannot, let him creep, Weeping, out of our circle.
Nature nurses Every creature with joy. All the good and the wicked alike Seek out her rosy scent. She gave us kisses and wine, And friendship that stands the test of death. Pleasure is granted even to the worm — And the cherub stands before God.
