Wessex and Downland Beaune Those of you who were able to join in the first Chapitre International in Beaune will have enjoyed a wonderful weekend where Jenny and I introduced our good friends John and Margaret Williams as new members of the Commanderie.

They are great Francophiles and share a passion for French wine. John is a devotee of the Cote d’Or and Margaret loves champagne, so we had arranged for Hubert Dauvergne, the Commandeur of Champagne to bring their initial supply to Beaune, along with our annual order!

Chapitre Magistral Wells - Saturday 6th October The first Chapitre Magistral of the new Commanderie of Wessex and Downland will take place in Wells in the West Country on Saturday 6th October. The Swan Hotel in the centre of the town will be the venue for both the ceremony and the meal. As Wells is about four hours by car from Dover, we have not planned an event for Saturday afternoon. We have though spied out The Crown pub as a rendezvous for lunch on Saturday for those who want to arrive early and enjoy the ambiance of the weekly market in the main square during the afternoon. On Sunday, we have organised a guided tour of the city at 10 a.m., followed by lunch in the ancient “Vicars Hall”. The high spot of Sunday will be Evensong in the Cathedral at 3 p.m. on the feast day of our patron St. Serge.

We are expecting that the majority of our French and Belgian visitors will stay for the service and also enjoy Sunday evening in Wells before setting off on Monday morning. Jenny and I will be staying at the hotel on Sunday evening and look forward to welcoming those who would like to join in a further « soirée » with our overseas guests. For them and anyone else who wants to join in, we have planned a visit to Stonehenge on Monday morning, followed by lunch in a pub just before Andover on the route back to the coast. We have negotiated a special tariff of £258 with the Swan Hotel for Saturday and Sunday nights for 2 people including breakfast and dinner on Sunday evening. PSBAN - Phil Smith

Accommodation for the Wells Magistral Please be aware that the Swan Hotel and most of the other hotels and guest houses in Wells seem to be insisting on two night stays. If you wish to stay on Saturday night only, you may be best to book into the Travelodge in Glastonbury and share a taxi.
