Synopsis
Dans Manchester by the Sea, le tout dernier film du réalisateur renommé Kenneth Lonergan, la vie d’un concierge solitaire de Boston est bouleversée lorsqu’il retourne dans sa ville natale afin de prendre soin de son neveu. Le passé des Chandler, une famille ouvrière vivant dans un village de pêcheurs du Massachusetts, sert de prémisse à Manchester by the Sea, qui pose un regard profondément émouvant sur le pouvoir de l’amour familial, de la communauté, des sacrifices et de l’espoir. À la mort de son frère aîné Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) est ébranlé d’apprendre qu’il a été désigné comme unique tuteur de son neveu Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Prenant congé de son emploi, Lee retourne à contrecœur vers Manchester-by-the-Sea afin de prendre soin de Patrick, un fougueux jeune homme de 16 ans, et se trouve forcé de faire face aux circonstances qui l’ont menées à se séparer de sa femme Randi (Michelle Williams) et de la communauté où il est né et fut élevé. Liés par le souvenir d’un homme ayant maintenu le lien familial, Lee et Patrick peinent à s’ajuster à une existence sans lui.
