Ouverture vers un public international : anglais The team Our team’s name is Hologramme. It is composed of four members who are: Florence Barret, Aurélie Soumet, Alexandre Mey and Vincent Tessier. From the very beginning we decided we wanted to create something funny, that’s why we made a game. Since it is quite a big project we divided the work that had to be done according to the abilities of each member of the team. Although we all worked together on conceiving the game’s concepts and also on the video we created, Florence made the network and website part, Aurélie created all the graphics (characters and landscapes), Alexandre was in charge of the programming and composed the game’s music and Vincent made the sound effects and the communication part.

The project Title Our project's name is “Séraphine - A conflict of generations”. Séraphine is the name of an old lady controlled by the player. The subtitle raises the problem evoked in the game: the disagreements between the young and the elderly. And more generally between different age groups. Moreover it is also interesting to note that the game we are developing is a generative program. (You can also notice the pun on the double meaning of the word “generation” here!)

Synopsis An old lady, “Séraphine”, is retired in her quiet countryside home and wants to keep her territory peaceful. Recently a camping site opened next to her home, and young tourists are starting to bother her. So she decides to do whatever it takes to make them leave the area.The goal of the game is thus very clear and simple : make the kids go away by using the objects you can find in the landscape.

Game play and navigation in the game The player controls Séraphine with the keyboard arrows. In order to attack the young, she has to collect objects (with a maximum of 5 objects) and can go all around the map without constraints. The objects have a limited number of use. Moreover, this map is five by five screen big, that is with 25 screens there is a good chance to meet the other characters without always having them cling to you. The player can select an object among those he picked up with the “page up” and “page down” keys. Then you press the “space bar” to use it. If you don’t have any object left, you can still hit your enemy with your purse like an authentic grandma.

Characters There are four characters in the game. First Séraphine, the old lady, who is controlled by the player. And then her opponents who are 3 kids with different tempers. Since they have the same enemy (who is Séraphine) they can cooperate to attack her together, but their own moody characters complicate their cooperation. Our team made every possible effort to make each person’s behaviour look realistic depending on the situation (if he’s hurt, in good health, equipped with objects or not…), and also depending on their basic temper (aggressive, funny, shy…). What is generated is therefore the different behaviours of the young. To simplify, what they are asking themselves is : whether or not I want to cooperate and whether or not I want to attack the little old lady. This generated part is quite complex and to make the reactions credible we used a system of gauges. For each character there are four gauges which determine the actions: Strength, Intelligence, Sociability, and Vigilance (ability to avoid attacks). There are also 2 more gauges which are Health and Speed. Obviously when one’s health gauge plummets to zero he disappears, or if it is your health gauge : you lose.

The objects In order to make interactions with each other, all characters must use objects to attack their enemy. There are 3 different object groups. Some can only be used to strike (branch, sweeper,…), others can only be thrown (rocks…) and the last category of objects is the one of those that can be consumed to increase or decrease the health of a character (apple, mushroom…). In addition to these characteristics each object has a defined maximum number of use. For example you can strike your enemy only 3 times with a sweeper before it breaks apart.
