Original concept was to design a ducted fan UAV. Laboratory project reduces the task to obstacle avoidance using vision. Only the main components are retained: Rotor for lift and forward speed Aerodynamic vane for pitch control Forward- and downward-looking eye for motion sensing and altitude regulation

Aircraft mounted on whirling arm to reduce degrees of freedom to 3. Aircraft powered by batteries at base of whirling arm. Onboard sensors: Tachometer (rotor RPM) Accelerometer mounted as inclinometer 20-pixel linear array of photodiodes Light intensities sensed by photodiodes are converted to velocity values by motion detection rack. PC runs Real Time Linux, digitizes signals and generates flight commands which are broadcast to aircraft via remote control system.
Airflow from rotor is redirected by aerodynamic vane which is commanded by a servo. Thrust can be varied by actuating the collective pitch servo.
Top view of horizontal slice through the head of a fly shows left and right eye. Light intensity is detected by photoreceptors in each ommatidia. Visual signals are then processed and aggregated in 3 successive layers. The insect controls its flight using motion detection. This was the main source of inspiration to devise the rotorcraft 's vision-based flight control system.
The eye
The eye is mounted underneath the aircraft and looks both in the frontal and ventral direction with a field of view of 75 degrees (top left). The retina is a 20pixel linear array of analog photodiodes (top right). The lens was adjusted so that the image of the environment is slightly defocused. A point light source appears as a blob (bottom left). Advantages of defocusing: Increases number of photoreceptors that sense light intensity, Reduces effect of aliasing – improved motion detection. Therefore a 24 mm lens was placed at 13 mm from retina. Final assembly at bottom right.
In an EMD, the light intensity of a contrast (white to black, say) is processed by separate channels. The first channel produces a spike with decaying exponential.The second channel produces only a spike. When multiplying both spikes, the slight delay due to contrast motion results in a spike whose amplitude is nearly proportional to the velocity of the contrast. The EMD was built as an analog circuit by Pichon & Blanes (late 80's) and we used 20 of them in the motion detection rack placed at the base of the whirling arm.
Anatomy and response fields of large field vertical neurons (Krapp, Hengstenberg & Hengstenberg)
These graphs show the directional sensitivity of 3 aggregating neurons of the vertical system of a fly's lobula. The stimulus is a black dot that rotates within a small part of the insect's field of view. The arrow's direction shows the direction of greatest neural response, the length gives the amplitude of the response. These measurements show for example that the VS1 neuron is most sensitive to downward motion in the frontal field of view and the sensitivity decreases as the location of stimulation is moved downwards. This matches the stimulation a fly would perceive when flying horizontally over flat terrain (see next slide).
The polar plot depicts the speed of contrasts projected on the retina when the aircraft is flying horizontally over flat terrain: Apparent motion in the frontal field of view is slow (need for greater motion sensitivity), Apparent motion in the ventral field of view is much faster than in the frontal field of view. A weighted average method was developed to balance motion perception in the frontal and ventral field of view. The derivative of the retinal motion equation shows how motion can be used to vary aircraft altitude.
We assume that the aircraft is tuned to fly at a preferred speed and average retinal motion. A Scilab simulation was written to test the concept for terrain following and obstacle avoidance. The same method can be used for visually-guided landings. All that is required is to forcefully decrease the aircraft speed but ensure that the flight controller conserves the initial average retinal motion. The aircraft has only one choice: decrease its altitude to maintain its preferred optical flow.
Flight at constant speed can be approximated by flight at constant pitch. We measured the response of the aircraft to command steps on the aerodynamic vane. From the response data PID regulators were programmed for backward flight and forward flight. The regulators feature an anti-windup paradigm. Transition between the regulators is done via a bumpless transfer method. The controller loops at 20 Hz.
Flight control system
Data is digitized by a ground-based Real-Time Linux system with 2 loops at 20 Hz. A Basic Stamp microcontroller interfaces the PC to the radio control system.
Experimental data
Top figure: trajectory of aircraft as measured by intrumented whirling arm. The aircraft avoids an obstacle ramp 4 times in a row. The trajectory is a little bouncy due to some ground effect. The aircraft flies very low over terrain at 2 to 3 m/s. Lower left figure: Motion signals measured by 19 elementary motion detectors. Some data is missing due to faulty electrical contacts --> the system can cope with degraded conditions.
