DOES ANYBODY ON THE PLANE SPEAK ENGLISH ? 1.

English is now an important international language for businessmen, students and tourists. But for pilots and air traffic controllers, it can be a question of life or death. 2. English is the accepted international language of aviation, and all pilots must pass an English language exam before they get their licences. But language and aviation experts in Britain, Australia and France say that the exam is not enough : some aviators can't speak simple English well. 3. These communication problems have caused many accidents, and could cause more, the experts say. " Because of the language problem, some aeroplanes have landed on wrong runways and sometimes at wrong airports. Others have crashed into each other in the air, » says Gerard Plukkel, a pilot from Holland. 4. Helen Weston, who works at France's Institute of Air Transport, said that on an international flight, a woman gave birth to a baby. The pilot said that there was a "mother" on the plane, but the air traffic controller understood that there was a murder on the plane. When the plane landed, there weren't any doctors at the airport, but there were a lot of policemen ! Source : Take it easy ( 1988 )

a runway = une piste pour avions.

a murder = un meurtre
