Bio Speaker 1: Lcl PENET Luc / EMAA Bureau Plans / OCEM Engagement-Combat In the DGA prospective studies, he is the EMAA representative officer for operational capability studies on UCAV. He is an active participant to UCAV “Men In The Loop” experimentations, to define UCAV autonomous concepts (CONOPS & CONUSE) through operational scenarios, particularly those defined between France & UK (DGA + DSTL). Bio Speaker 2: Laurent BERNOVILLE / Thales Systèmes Aéroportés / Mission System Technical Direction / Electronic Warfare systems expert & mission-level simulations manager. In the UCAV prospective studies, he is the TSA engineer managing simulations for sensors & communications for UCAV systems: “EW survivability” simulations and MITL simulations for UCAV autonomy concept studies. Abstract (in english) Men In The Loop simulations have been extensively used in the French – UK concept studies on UCAV future systems, to define the autonomous concepts that should lead the Future Combat Aircraft System definition. These UCAV studies have involved French and UK systems and simulation teams with participation of Army and Air Force Officers together with industry engineers during three main phases from 2010 up to 2014: 1.

National Goals & Assumptions and Common Scope with Autonomy Research Question List (ARQL)

2.

Experimentations phase of new autonomous concepts, with experienced military personnel,

3.

National Results and Common Key Findings.

ARQL was dealing with Man-machine & Ground/on-board sharing, Organisation of operators, Levels of autonomy of functions & systems, Man-machine interface solutions, C2 / ISR Network, dynamic mission management and also Test & evaluation assessment methodology. Formal theoretical studies were a key precursor to Synthetic Environment (SE) experimentations to identify critical areas of risk and opportunity. Then test & evaluation methodology were based on both : •

“Technical” Scenarios and Analysis of Autonomy Questions and associated trade-off,

“Operational” scenarios with the participation of the Air Force Officers.

The experimentation in Synthetic Environment was driven with different levels of autonomy for each scenario phases, addressing following ARQL items: •

On-board - Ground Sharing,

Man - Machine Sharing,

MMI principle with fast prototyping,

Evaluation of high level command for Command & Control Sensors Suites,

Impact of the Communications resources, bandwidth and latency.

This conference will show the benefits of this new evaluation methodology.
