MEMO AIRBUS A319/A320/A321 Flight Preparation & Pre-Flight Briefing
Note This document is for personal use only and must not be used for operational flight. Airbus FCOM and QRH must be considered as the only reference. This document describes how to prepare a flight on AIRBUS A319/A320/A321 and perform the preflight Briefing.
1. Pre-Flight Briefing content During pre-flight briefing with crew, we have to check and study at least, all items listed below: Aircraft status (CDL, MEL) Flight plan Fuel to load NOTAMS WEATHER Review EUROC chart WIND chart TAF – METAR o Weight and Balance o Performances / Limitations o o o o o
2. Aircraft status (CDL, MEL) The first step of the preparation is to check the status of the aircraft to check inoperative systems. We have to open in CDL (Deviation List) and MEL (Minimum Equipment List) to check if the flight is possible with this aircraft. Include a sample of MEL 3. Flight plan Then, we can check flight plan computed by Operations: • Takeoff airport • Destination airport • Alternate airport at Takeoff (if needed see below) • Alternate 1 at destination (if needed, see below) • Alternate 2 at destination (if needed see below) 3.1. • •
Check weather condition compatible for an Airport At Destination : Check Weather OK At Alternate : Check the following
Approach type Cat II ou Cat III Cat I Classical approach Visual Approach Laurent ALAPHILIPPE

Note 1: RVR Note 2: Plafond >= MDH 3.2. Choice of Alternate airport at takeoff Mandatory if : Weather not OK at takeoff airport to perform a landing Location :
For Airbus A319/A320/A321 (2 engines rule must be applied) • 1h at Vp (N-1) • Weather condition are compatible for a landing
3.3. Choice of Alternate airport at destination Always mandatory except if one of the 2 conditions below occurs: Condition 1 : • Flight below 6 hours • 2 distinct runways available at destination (Spaced 750m) • Weather OK 1h before and after o 2000ft or MDH of MV +500ft o visibility > 5km Condition 2 : • Isolated airport • No adequate airport at destination
3.4. Choice of Second Alternate airport at destination Mandatory if : • Weather OK 1h before and after • No weather available at destination 3.5. Choice of Alternate in route In the case, we need 2 alternate at destination, we can choose: • Alternate 1 at Destination • Alternate in route located in a circle: o Circle center: Max(25% dist FPL , 20% dist FPL+50NM) o Circle radius 20% dist FPL
4. Fuel to load Calculate the followings (2 Qty and 5 Reserves) • TAXI 300kg (include APU) • TRIP SID + TRIP + PROC • Laurent ALAPHILIPPE

6. WEATHER Review 6.1. EUROC chart 6.2. WIND chart 6.3. TAF – METAR Describe general situation with H and L systems Winds at cruise altitude TAF METAR to check Alternate airports Decode information if TAF includes special data like: 08090055 (compacted, braking good) R25/190071 (braking good) R20/190062 R75/190069
7. Weight and Balance For A320, we start to load pax in the middle of the aircraft, then 50% Backward and 50% Afterward. For A321, we start to load pax backward, then middle, then afterward (near cockpit) To compute Center of gravity, we need to have Dry Operation Weight (for eg.: 55 tons) 8. Limitations Check what is the limitation of the day, for example landing weight: 9. Performances Check -1kt/tons (QRH) -5kt Anti Ice (QRH)
