WORKING AS A TEAM: FORMULA ONE PIT STOP
Page 2
-scriptPit stops are part of moto racing history. Against the relentless stopwatch, time is critical and pressure is high. Mistakes are easily made. FORCE-INDIA (MERCEDES) have a team of 26 men awaiting their formula one car. The lollipop man, 3 on the jacks, 2 team members to start the motor and pneumatic refill, a fireman and an emergency crew for the fuel rig dead man's handle. 4 on the wheel guns. 4 men take the wheels off. 4 more put fresh tyres back on. 2 refuellers plus 2 more for the backup fuel rig. Pit stop crews are well aware they could win or lose races. [Dialogues "……When the car comes towards me hoping it stops on the mark…"] The lollipop man (1): silly name but serious job. He guides the driver to his garage, advises when he has to select first gear and then he must released the car at exactly the right point (unlike this Ferrari Schumacher pit stop). The fuel men need to be like rugbyplayers the fuel hose is very heavy. They must attached to nozzle accurately then push through the valve. It's high quality road car petrol including 5 per cent bio fuel flowing at 12 liters per second. That's a lot of fuel and if it goes wrong it goes horribly wrong. Hot racing cars and fresh fuel shouldn't mix: a fireman stands by. The front jack-man sometimes risks his legs to stop the car and using a manual jack against the front wing he lifts in unisson with the rear jack man. They have blind faith that the driver will stop (occasionally misplaced). A third side jack is used to stabilised the car or if they need to change the front wing when it's damaged. To change noze and wing sections the crew move around. Two men leave from wheel duties to become the wing men taking just 12 seconds and using 2 captive bolts. The gun men are waiting on one knee with compressed-air gun. They need the driver to stop on his mark so the wheel mark is directly in front of them and the frantic work begins. Sometimes the wheel nut won't go on and sometimes the wheel won't stay on. 4 men are ready to take the very hot wheels off. 4 more men put the fresh wheels and tyres on and get terribly disappointed when only 3 turn up. A great pit stop is a perfect display of human and mechanical harmony. When every second is precious and the driver's safety is at stake. Fangio had the luxury of being out of his car for over a minute while 2 mechanics serviced it. Now 26 men get the job done in less than 10 seconds.

task three: (team work) Your mission! You are a well-known spy and it's your job to find out why the other formula one team is doing better than you. According to the video it's amazing to see how quickly mechanics are able to service a car in the middle of a car race. John Adams is chief mechanic and crew leader of a pit-stop crew. Here he explains his work: I'm the crew leader, and I have twenty mechanics in my crew. It's dangerous work, so we wear fire suits and safety helmets. I have five teams: wheel-gun, wheel-on; wheel-off, wheel-jack and fuel. Every second is important in the middle of a race, so everyone moves quickly and works together as a team.
3-1-In the table T1, some instructions are missing. Work in pair and find them in table T2. Then cut them out and glue them at the right place. T1 activity 1 I give the order: "get ready!". The four wheel-on mechanics bring out the new wheels. The tyres are covered in warm blankets. The team leader adjusts the air pressure in the tyres.
2
The car enters the pit lane and slow down. The driver presses a button in his cockpit. This opens the fuel flap.
3
The car approaches the garage. I signal to the driver: STOP! The driver slows down and drives towards the crew. He stops his car as accurately as possible.
4
5
The two wheel-jack team members run to the car and place the jacks under the front and rear of the car. They raise the car off the ground and move back quickly.
6
Then three members of the fuel team move toward. One carries the fuel nozzle and the other two carry the fuel hose: it weighs 40 kg. The front fuel mechanic pushes the nozzle into the fuel socket on the car. They then switch on the fuel pump.
7
8
Now the wheel-on guys move forward.they take the warm blankets off the new wheels, put the new wheels on the car and move back quickly. On the other side ofthe car, another mechanic puts his arm into the cockpit and cleans the driver's visor.

The wheel-jack people lower the car to the ground and take the jacks away. Now everyone is waiting. The fuel guys are still pumping the fuel into the tank. They hold the fuel nozzle and hose in place until the fuel is in the car.
11
12
The fuel pump switches off and the fuel guys pull out the fuel nozzle. Another fuel team member clean spilled fuel off the car and moves back quickly. Immediately, I signal to the driver: GO!
13
14
The car speeds up and leaves the pit lane. It's in the race again.
3-2- Complete the table below by writing the instructions according to the team. 3-3-Put numbers in the arrows matching the instructions Wheel-jack team

T2 time activity The wheel-off mechanics move forward. They take the old wheels off and take them away. The car moves to the end of the pit lane. The driver presses the button to close the fuel flap. I signal to the driver: SELECT FIRST GEAR!. He pushes the gear lever into first gear and waits. The wheel-gun guys move forward and tighten the nuts. Then they raise a hand to signal that everything is OK The four wheel-gun mechanics run to the car. They loosen the nuts with their wheel guns. Then they move back quickly.

4-SPEAKING
Page 6
PRACTICE:
TASK 1:
Create a dialogue between an instructor and someone who is learning (a learner) The instructor GIVES INSTRUCTIONS (USING IMPERATIVE): example: - bring out the new wheels The learner (L) tells the instructor (I):
what HE IS DOING (USING PRESENT PROGRESSIVE): example: - I'm bringing out the new wheels
what HE HAS DONE (USING PRESENT PERFECT): example: - I've brought the wheels out EXAMPLE OF DIALOGUE:
Instructor Learner Learner Instructor
- bring out the new wheels -Right, I'm bringing the new wheels out now -OK, I've brought them out -Good, let's move on to the next step then.
Have you noticed: Right ……..now Good (short for good job)
1- Here is a set of instructions to work on: 1-Lift up the front of the car
2-Take off the nut
3-Put on the new wheel
4-Adjust the pressure in the tyre
Write the first two dialogues as example: - Lift up the front of the car
Take off the nut
-.
-.
-.
-.
-
2- First choose two dialogues and before making a recording of them by using AUDACITY SOFTWARE, practice the dialogue with your partner as much as you need. You must remember to save your work under your names: example: TASK1a-NAME1_NAME2.mp3
-Swap roles (the instructor is now the learner) and make another recording.

Page 7
Task 2: Make dialogues sound more natural Now the instructor asks questions to see how the learner is getting on with the job. We can differentiate three stages regarding the work we are required to do: state
When work is already done When work is in progress
When work is not done yet
tense
Present perfect
Present progressive
Present perfect
Loose the wheel nut
Put the new wheel on
I'm still loosening the wheel nut Are you bringing out the new wheels at the moment?
I haven't put the new wheel on yet Have you put the new wheel on yet?
example Bring the wheel out
I've already brought the wheel out Have you brought the wheel out already? EXAMPLE:
I- what are you doing? L-I've already brought the wheel out. I'm still loosening the wheel nut. It's almost done. I- Good. Have you put the new wheel on yet? L- No, I haven't done it yet. But I'll do it next. Tips:
instead of:
What you are doing?
You can say:
How is it going? Wait a minute
instead of:
It's almost done
You can say: Just about Ok. I've done it.
1-Practice doing dialogues from these instructions.
NOW IT'S YOUR TURN:
Work done
Work in progress
Work not done yet
Switch off electricity
Check the circuit
Find any faulty parts
Raise the car
Take off the wheel
Adjust the pressure in the new wheel
2-Then, make a recording. Don't forget to swap roles and to save your work !! (Give names to files:example: TASK2a-NAME1_NAME2.mp3 ) 3-Write down these two last dialogues on the following page. Philippe VIGNAT

NOTES: Use of ALREADY and YET http://www.pearsonlongman.com/ae/azar/grammar_ex/message_board/archive/articles/00334.html
Both already and yet can be used in questions: (a) (b)
Have you finished your work already? Have you finished your work yet?
Already in a question often expresses surprise; in sentence (a), the speaker is surprised that you have finished your work by now. It is sooner than expected. Yet in a question is more neutral; in sentence (b) the speaker just wants to know whether you have finished your work. The speaker is not expecting that you have finished it, nor is he/she expecting that you haven't. Use of STILL: http://www.anglaisfacile.com/exercices/exercice-anglais-2/exercice-anglais-26025.php Still (encore, toujours) est utilisé pour indiquer que quelque chose est toujours en cours et n'est pas encore terminé, Look! It's still snowing! Another useful website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/grammar/learnit/learnitv250.shtml

task 3: play role (work in pair) your mission! You have to explain how to change a wheel. The situation:
you are on a car trip in a middle of nowhere and suddenly you realise that one of the tyre is flat! As you are not really good at changing a wheel you decide to phone your best friend for a helping hand. Make sure that your dialogue includes the instructions below as much as possible.
