SITUATION UPDATE 1: TROPICAL STORM SANDY OVER HAITI. Port-au-Prince and Croix-des-Bouquets districts
PREFACE: This report provides an overview (See map 1) of current situation in Port-au-Prince and Croix-des-Bouquets districts, Haiti. DMC satellite imagery acquired on the 03rd November 2012 and pre-crisis DMC satellite imagery acquired on 23rd November 2012 have been used for this report. As a complement and example, UAV’s images, extracted from an IOM mission in Haiti along Rivière Grise are shown in this report (See Figures 2 & 3). Tropical storm Sandy passed across Haiti on 23rd October 2012. Heavy rains (See Figure 1) caused flash floods, landslides and damages to infrastructure. Geographic datasets produced for this assessment and additional UNOSAT products are available at http://www.unitar.org/unosat/maps. This report is part of an ongoing satellite monitoring program of UNITAR / UNOSAT in support of international humanitarian assistance and created to respond to the needs of UN agencies and their partners. This is assessment has not yet been validated in the field. Please send feedback to UNITAR/UNOSAT at the contact information below. 1.
Site 1: Rivière Grise As the tropical storm followed a south to west path over Haiti between 23 and 26 October 2012, Sud, Ouest, Sud-Est, Nippes and Grand’Anse regions have been affected by heavy rains (See Figure 1). Flash floods, mud slides, crops and infrastructure damages have been caused by those rains. Ten days after the storm passed, floods traces are not obvious but swollen rivers, turbid waters are visible. The resolution of the imagery didn’t allow a damage assessment. Nevertheless, an estimation, thanks to open data and UAV’s survey on the ground, can be done.
Figure 1 – Accumulated rainfall between 24 and 29 October 2012 over Haiti.
Figure 2 page 3, shows an overview of Rivière Grise as of 30th October 2012. Zooming in along the river path allows to show how strong was the flash flood (See Figure 3) and how it caused heavy damages on houses and that mud remains.

Site 2: Severe mud slides / turbid standing waters in Croix-des Bouquets, Ouest region
Figures 4 & 5 show the comparison before and after the storm in the Ouest region, between Jacque, Dame Marie, Roche Blanche villages. The mud slide and turbid water are clearly visible on the DMC image in clear blue color. Crops, roads, tracks and some hamlets have been severely inundated / damaged.
