QANTAS AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX MELBOURNE 25-26-27-28 MARCH 2010
BRAWN PLUS BRAINS PLUS THE OTHER TWO B’S ADDS UP TO INSTANT SUCCESS THE 2009 FORMULA 1 ING AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX It took some time for the smoke to settle on the first twilight race at Albert Park. But when it did, two veterans who might have been on the scrap-heap were on top of the world and the reputation of the sport’s youngest World Champion lay in tatters. Brawn GP emerged phoenix-like from Honda’s failed bid to conquer the F1 world, Ross Brawn and Nick Fry stitching together a last-minute rescue package that saw the ‘new’ team manage only limited running in Spain before the 2009 season kicked off in Melbourne. They walked into a political storm as well, when Brawn, Toyota and Williams all came under protest from Red Bull, Renault and Ferrari at the start of race weekend over the alleged illegality of their rear bodywork, the infamous diffusers that can dramatically affect the cars’ aerodynamic performance. Once that hurdle was negotiated, Brawn’s two seasoned drivers, Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello – with over 400 Grand Prix starts between them – simply destroyed the opposition, qualifying first and second to set up the platform for Sunday’s race. Some claimed this was the greatest performance by a ‘new’ team in half a century, but that was to ignore the Honda infrastructure that Brawn inherited and the long pedigree of most of the team’s principal players. “Rubens and I have gone from not knowing whether we had a drive, or any future in racing, to qualifying on the front row,” said Button after claiming only the fourth pole position of his long career and his second at Albert Park. “It is just amazing, it really is...” Protests continued into qualifying as Ferrari appealed against the over-flexible rear wings of the two Toyotas and the cars were duly excluded from the qualifying classification, while Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren incurred a fiveplace grid penalty for a gearbox change after Q1. And so to the late afternoon, sunlit start. It was a tale of two Brawns, to begin with, as Button got away cleanly but his Brazilian sidekick got momentarily bogged down. When Barrichello got going, he claimed to have had a helping hand from behind from one of the McLarens as the Brawn careered into the Red Bull of luckless Australian Mark Webber. The accident also sucked in Nick Heidfeld’s BMW Sauber, Heikki Kovalainen’s McLaren and the Force India of Adrian Sutil, though Webber, the Finn and Sutil were all able eventually to resume. Button’s progress to only his second Formula 1 victory was untroubled despite a Safety Car intervention on lap 19 when Nakajima’s Williams went off and a sloppy spit stop on lap 47. Life might have got a little more challenging for the Englishman in the closing stages had not the fast-closing Robert Kubica’s BMW Sauber and Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull argued over the same piece of road between Turns 3 and 4 on lap 56, an indiscretion that cost the young German 10 grid places for the following race at Sepang in Malaysia. XXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXX As Button sped to victory and Barrichello somehow cannon-balled his way back up to make it a Brawn 1-2, XXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXX Jarno Trulli and Lewis Hamilton provided the main late talking-point of the race. A minor ‘off’ on the grass saw XXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXX Trulli’s Toyota lose a place to Hamilton. The Italian, thinking the Englishman was yielding the position, took it XXXXXXXXXXX back next time round – and earned a 25-second penalty for his trouble. XXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXX It would emerge only a week later that Hamilton, initially classified third, and a senior McLaren team member had
misled race officials about the driver’s intentions, and XXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXX race results, handing Trulli the final podium place. XXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXX
