138 Peregrine Falcon AGEING 3 types of age can be recognized: Juvenile with feathers on upperparts brown with rufous edge (missed early by wear): rufous breast with dark brown streaks; tail feathers with pale tips and rufous bars; grey bluish ocular ring and legs. 2nd year with juvenile brown feathers on upperparts and/or wing coverts admixed with grey adult pattern. Adult with grey upperparts; breast with fine lateral streaking; tail feathers without pale tip; yellow ocular ring and legs. Peregrine Falcon. Adult. Male (25-X).

PEREGRINE FALCON (Falco peregrinus)

MOULT Complete postbreeding moult, finished in November. No postjuvenile moult.

IDENTIFICATION Male: 38-45 cm; female: 46-51 cm. Adults with grey upperparts; pale underparts with fine streaking; dark head with broad moustache; dark grey tail, with dark bands; long and pointed wings; dark eyes; yellow legs. Juveniles with rufous and streaked underparts.

SIMILAR SPECIES Hobby has a moustache too, but this species is smaller (35 mm) and has red “trousers”.

STATUS IN ARAGON Resident, with a little contribution of wintering European birds. Breeds widely distributed through all the Region related with mountains and cliffs.
